River Description

The Green River from the Gates of Lodore to Echo Park is one of the more selective permitted whitewater runs in the West.  The lottery for launch dates is restrictive because of the popularity of the run.  Campsites are assigned before you launch based on request list so pick your campsites wisely to maximize your experience.  The entire run could be done in a couple of days but that really detracts from the pleasure of hiking the side canyons and looking at the petroglyphs.  Campsites are actually marked with named posts.

For the most part the Green is not a serious whitewater river.  There are a few easy class III rapids and numerous class II rapids throughout the run.  The trip starts with the Gates of Lodore, where the river cuts through the mountains creating a spectacular scene.   Once in the canyon you will encounter a few small rapids.  In the first 10 miles there are 2 larger class III drops but the main difficulty to both rapids is for the rafters avoiding pinning rocks.  Eventually the river slows down in a large pool above Hells Half Mile.  The main drop is simple and probably a III+ or a very low grade class IV.  The biggest problem with this rapid are the rocks below the drop.  These can flip full sized gear rafts.  After Hell’s Half Mile the river slows down again and eventually reaches Echo Park.  Most boaters will continue down to the bottom takeout.
